Gladys "Nana" Brown
Gladys Brown, 87, affectionately known as "Nana" by so many, passed away Saturday Dec. 20, 2003, at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, KS. Mrs. Brown was born Aug. 5, 1916, in Coffeyville, to Clyde and Artina Searles Bennett. Mrs. Brown was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, who brought joy to everyone who knew her. Her final resting place will be in the hearts of her family and friends. bShe was preceded in death by her parents, Artina and Clyde Bennett; her husband, Julian Brown; grandson, Michael Washington; and great-grandchildren, Michael Cooper and Angela Washington. She is survived by two loving daughters, Roberta (Verlondon) Harris and Mary Louise (Mark) Tolbert; one sister, Gladys Royston; brother, Victor Bennett; one niece, Naomi Royston; 13 grandchildren, Tonya Washington, Denise Sanders, Christina (Leslie) Williams, Elizabeth (James) Mitchell, Verlondon II (Tracy) Harris, Martha Powell, Mimi Baker, Patti Ann Tolbert, Chuck Tolbert, Harry Tolbert, Phillip Tolbert, Maria Tolbert, and Stephen and wife, Belinda Webb. She had 26 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind special friends, Bill Masterson, Barb Herring and Shannon Ellis and family. Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Visitation for close family and friends will be between 8 and 8:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral chapel. Interment will follow in the Leavenworth National Cemeter. The Rev. Tracy Harris will officiate.

Hazel Leona Elmen, 85, Edwardsville, KS died Friday, December 19, 2003 at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, KS. She was born June 25, 1918 in Leavenworth, KS the daughter of Earl Malcolm Berg and Hazel M. Jost Berg. She married Franklin J. Elmen, he preceded her in death. She was a Homemaker and a member of the Church Of The Open Door. Survivors include: 3 daughters-Frances Marie Saas, Minneapolis, MN; Roberta June Elmen, Kansas City, KS; Linda C. Monacci, Virginia Beach, VA. 1 son-Frank David Elmen, Lewisville, TX. 3-brothers-Malcolm Berg, Rev. Alvin Berg, and Harold Berg all of Leavenworth, KS. 8 grandchilren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, 12/29/03 at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee St., Leavenworth, KS. The Reverend Alvin Berg will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, 12/28/03 at the Davis Funeral Chapel.


F. Edward White
F. Edward White, 77, Lansing, KS died Saturday, December 20, 2003 at Broadway Heights, Leavenworth, KS. He was born August 16, 1926 in Basehor, KS the son of Frank H. White and Lily H. Warren White. On December 8, 1946 in Leavenworth, KS he married Virginia R. Powell. She survives him. He was a Maintenance Supervisor for a manufacturing company. Ed was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Basehor, KS. He was a 60 year member and Past Master of the 9 Mile Lodge, Lansing, KS; Past President of the Ritualistic Divan of Abdallah Shrine; Past Patron of Graham Chapter #395, Lansing, KS; Associate Member of the Desota Chapter #78. He was a former Boy Scout Leader, former 4H Leader, former Methodist Youth Fellowship Leader, member of the VFW, General Manager of Boys American Legion Baseball team, and member of the Odd Fellows of Kansas City, KS. Survivors include wife, Virginia R. White of the home. 2 sons, Robert E. White, wife Lily, of Leavenworth, KS and James F. White, wife Leslie, Baldwin City, KS. 5 Grandchildren, Terry White, Kevin White, Brian White, John White and Jacquelin White. 5 Great Granchildren, Isaac Twombly, Connor Twombly, Alex T. Twombly, Quinn T. Twombly and Logan White. He was preceded in death by 1 son, Thomas A. White and 2 brothers, Charles and John White. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee St. Leavenworth, KS. There will be a Masonic Service held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Chaplain Jack Divine will officiate. James E. Gooch, Jr.
James E. Gooch, Jr. 40, of Norfolk, NE., formerly of Leavenworth, KS died Wednesday, December 17, 2003 in Stanton, NE. He was born February 25, 1963 in Leavenworth, KS the son of James E. Gooch, Sr. and Margaret G. Emery Gooch. He married Kathy Bambrat, she preceded him in death. He was a Control Supervisor with the Northeast Nebraska Juvenile Services in Madison, NE. Survivors include 4 daughters-Jessi Gooch, Paige Gooch, Jamie Gooch and Cassidy Gooch; 2 sons-Tyler Gooch and Matthew Gooch; his mother, Margaret Gooch, Leavenworth, KS; 1 brother, D'Wayne Gooch; 3 sisters-Gloria Wilson, Kellie Davis, and Angelita Schmidt.
He was also preceded in death by his father, James E. Gooch, Sr. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. James C.M.E. Church, 621 Pennsylvania St., Leavenworth, KS, with funeral service to begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Church. The Rev. Dawn Jackson will officiate.Burial will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Kay Day, 68, Parkville, MO died Thursday, December 18, 2003 at St. Luke's Hosptal, Kansas City, MO.
She was born September 11, 1935 in Leavenworth, KS the daughter of Howard L. and Bertha May Smart Jones. She worked as a Key Punch Operator in a hospital in Columbia, MO. She was retired. She attended the Fortress of Faith Christian Fellowship in Leavenworth, KS. Survivors include her children, Terry Day, Parkville, MO., Jamie Day, Cary, NC., Pamela S. Gentry, Jefferson City, MO. and Cynthia L. Moon, Birmingham, AL., her mother, Bertha May Smart Jones, Leavenworth, KS., Brother, Pastor Howard Neil Jones, Leavenworth, KS., Sisters, Clovis Swokowski, Leavenworth, KS. and Sue Dragieff, Leavenworth, KS., and 9 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Howard L. Jones. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Friday, 12/19/2003 at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee Street, Leavenworth, KS. Pam G. Patzwald
Pam G. Patzwald, 54, of Leavenworth, Kansas passed away December 17, 2003 at the University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas. Pam was born October 19, 1949 in Leavenworth, KS to Floyd and Ruby (Rogers) Wiseman. She had two daughters by a previous marriage. She married Richard Patzwald, Jr. on April 24, 1982. Pam was employed by Shook, Hardy and Bacon in Kansas City, MO. And was a member of the Southern Heights Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Richard Patzwald, Jr., daughter, Mitzi Cook and husband Kevin of Camden Point, MO., Kristi Patzwald and Dave Blankenship of Montreal, MO., Ricki and Stacey Patzwald of Camdenton, MO., and three grandchildren who were the joy of her life, Alexa and Kaleb Cook and Ashley Patzwald, who loved their Mimi and was so dear to her heart. She is also survived by her father in law Richard Patzwald, Sr and wife Kay, Leavenworth, KS., and her sister, Donna Meyers and husband Gary, Leavenworth, KS., 2 brothers, Ronnie Wiseman and wife Diane, Lansing, KS., and Gary Wiseman and wife Julie, Santa Clarita, CA., as well as many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Ruby Wiseman, her daughter Tishe McFadden and her mother in law, Annette Patzwald. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 P.M. Violet Ruth Godfrey
Violet Ruth Godfrey, 71, Leavenworth, passed away at home Saturday, Dec. 13 2003, after a prolonged illness. She departed this life of pain and sorrow to become one of the host of angels in God's eternal heaven. She placed her trust and faith in God through the teaching of the Lutheran Church. All who knew her and loved her will mourn her passing but take comfort in the knowledge that she now enjoys peace. She was born Feb. 5, 1932, in Elmira, MO., the daughter of Elza Pratt and Effie Fay Fowler Rudolph. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Leavenworth where she has been a resident since that time. Besides being a loving and caring wife and mother, she still sought employment at times and had worked at the Planters Hotel, Bell Laundry and the Boss Glove Factory to name a few. Ruth was first married to Charles Sidney Williams Sr. for a period of approximately 22 years. Mr. Williams is since deceased. Four children were born of the marriage. On Aug. 5, 1974, she married Lynnford Ray Godfrey. No children were born of this marriage. Survivors include her husband of the home; her loving and devoted children, Charles Sidney Williams Jr., Gledale, Ariz., Ruth Ann Chmidling, rural northwest Leavenworth County, Sharon Sue Blankenship, Lansing, and Clyde Scott Williams, rural Leavenworth County; her two sisters, Fay Langford, Kansas City, MO., and Lilian Smith, Overbrook; her two brothers, Samuel Rudolph, Kansas City, Kan., and Billie Rudolph, Ft. Worth, Texas; many nephews and nieces; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003. Pastor William Say will officiate. Shortly after, the deceased will be removed to Mount Muncie Cemetery for burial. Loretta M. Klasinski
Loretta M. Klasinski, 80, Leavenworth, KS died Saturday, December 6, 2003 at the Medicalodge of Leavenworth. She was born December 22, 1922 in Leavenworth, KS the daughter of John A. and Gertrude Ann Weber Klasinski. She worked at Fort Leavenworth, KS in the clerical department. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, L.C.B.A., Daughters of Isabelle, American Legion Auxiliary, and NARFE. Survivors include her Sister, Dolores A. Klasinski, Overland Park, KS; Brother, Elmer G. Klasinski, Leavenworth, KS.
Loretta was married for a time to William E. Lough, who is deceased. His Children are:William H. Lough, Leavenworth; Susan D. Supplee, Leavenworth; Michael E. Lough, Kingfisher, OK; Patrick E. Lough, Leavenworth; Samuel A. Lough, Lansing; and Phillis M. LaFontaine, Leavenworth. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. David McEvoy will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Laurel J. Price
Laurel J. Price, 40, Leavenworth, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.
Laurel was born Jan. 26, 1963, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Kenneth W. and Eleanor L. Chinn. On July 8, 1983, Laurel married Mark Price at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Leavenworth. Mark survives at the home.
Laurel is also survived by two daughters, Lauri Beth Price and Rebecca Price, of the home; her parents, Kenneth W. and Eleanor L. Chinn, Lansing; two sisters, June Walker of Kansas City, Mo., and Deborah Benson of Piper; two brothers, Kenneth Chinn Jr. and Douglas Chinn, both of California. No visitation is planned. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 24481 139th St., Leavenworth, (1-913-772-6688). Pastor Kenneth E. Lake Jr. will officiate. Robert Quincy Mayes, Jr.
Robert Quincy Mayes, Jr. passed away suddenly on Dec. 1, 2003 at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. Robert was the son of Ruby Johnson of Dallas, TX and the late Robert Quincy Mayes. Robert was born in Los Angeles, CA. Robert moved to Dallas, TX at a young age and resided there until he joined the United States Army in 1976. Robert worked as a motor vehicle operator but his passion way always music. Throughout his life he always worked in the field of entertainment, from developing musical and dance talents in Germany to most recently performing as a disc jockey for several clubs in the Leavenworth and Kansas City area. Robert is survived by three siblings, a brother Derrick Johnson, Dallas, TX and sisters, Michele Mayes, Chicago, IL and Cynthia James, Sacramento, CA. It was while in the Army that Robert met and married Teresa Warner Mayes on July 13, 1978. Together they had three children, Andrea, Adrian and Alexander Mayes, Manhattan, KS. Robert is also survived by son Lamont Graham and granddaughter Miracle Graham of Dallas, TX. In his later years, he shared a loving relationship with Keisha Reid and sons Dominique and Derique Cary, Leavenworth, KS. He will be missed by friends who knew him not by Robert, but simply "Mayes". Angie Briggs, his best friend laughs and smiles when she talks of their many road trips to his sons football games or holiday get-togethers. His vivacious personality drew people to him. He never knew a stranger or left you without a glimpse of his boyish smile. The funeral will be held at the Independent Missionary Baptist Church on 6th & Pottawatomie Street, Leavenworth, KS at 10 a.m., with visitation from 9-10 a.m. The revice will be officiated by Chaplain McLilly of the Collective Protestant Gospel Service, the church Robert attended at Fort Leavenworth, KS. Eulogy will be given by his brother Derrick Johnson. Pall Bearers will be Vernon Birmingham, Rodrick McDaniel, Grant, & Gavin Maiava, Marcus Reid, Charles Grey, and Glen Darby. Interment will follow at the Leavenworth VA National Cemetery on 4th Street Trafficway in Leavenworth, KS. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to his children's educational fund at Ft. Riley National Bank, Ft. Riley, KS.


Dorothy June Owens
Dorothy June Owens, 76, Leavenworth, KS died Saturday, November 29, 2003 at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, KS. She was born October 6, 1927 in Leavenworth, KS the daughter of Floyd J. and Dorothy Burkett Hill. In 1959 in Black Oak, IN she married Norman M. Owens, Sr., he preceded her in death on May 16, 1985. She was a Homemaker and a Christian. Dorothy is survived by: 2 daughters, Morrine J. Filley, and husband Ed, Leavenworth, KS and Pamela R. Derzinski, and husband Bill, Lansing, KS. 3 sons, Philip D. Fox, and wife Pam, Basehor, KS, Norman M. Owens, Jr. and wife Sharon, Topeka, KS, and Robert R. Owens, and wife Dalia North Eastern, MA. 4 sisters, Esther Oliver, Charlotte Northern, Margaret Waters, Patricia Sexton, and Virginia Johnson. 14 Grandchildren, 22 Great Grandchildren, and 3 Great great grandchildren. Dorothy was also preceded in death by 1 son, 4 sisters, and 3 brothers. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday (today) at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee St., Leavenworth, KS. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Steve Slack of the Wallula Christian Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Muncie Cemetery. George E. Seamon
George E. Seamon, 62, Lansing, KS died Friday, November 28, 2003 at his home. He was born October 3, 1941 in Leavenworth, KS the son of Theadore H. and Ethil Metz Seamon. George retired from the Veterans Administration Center in Leavenworth where he was a Nursing Assistant. He served in the United States Air Force. He is survived by his sons, Robert Seamon of Kansas City, MO and Edward Seamon of Sedalia, MO; 4 Brothers, Leo Seamon,Texas, David Seamon, Lansing, KS, Thomas Seamon and Lloyd Seamon of Leavenworth, KS; 3 Sisters, Alice Cooley and Carol Barbara of Texas and Judy Hubble of Kansas; 1 Grandchild. Graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. No visitation is planned. The Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee Street, Leavenworth, KS is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Gladys Luse Sanders
Gladys Luse Sanders, 90, Leavenworth, KS died Wednesday November 26, 2003 at St. John Hospital, Leavenworth, KS. She was born October 20, 1913 in Nortonville, KS the daughter of Charles Darrell and Maggie Jones Luse. She married Harold E. Sanders on September 27, 1933. He preceded her in death on July 8, 1991. She was retired from the Veterans Administration Center where she had been a L.P.N. She attended the Wesleyan Church in Leavenworth. She was a member of the Hegron Baptist Church in rural Winchester, KS and a member of the Retired Federal Employees. Survivors include: 1 Brother-Elgie Luse, 1 Sister Violet Hayden, and many nieces and nephews. 1 grandson, Dr. Marc Sanders. Preceded in death by her son, Dr. Harold L. Sanders, 2 Brothers, Albert Luse and Omer Luse, and 1 Sister, Esther Hannah. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Funeral Chapel Burial will be in the McLouth Cemetery, McLouth, KS. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions be given to the Multiple Sclerosis of Leavenworth County.


Paul Racine
Retired U.S. Marine Corp. Gy. Sgt. Paul Racine, 67, Leavenworth, died at Colonial Manor, Sunday, November 16, 2003. He was the first born to Emilien and Irene (La Valle) Racine March 19, 1936 in Brunswick, Maine. He married Carol Koerber in 1958. They later divorced. He married Evelyn Duree on January 4, 1997. He was career military serving in the U.S. Marine Corp for 21 years. During his career he received numberous Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with devices, Navy Commendation Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. Following his military career, he retired from the Federal Prison. He is catholic. He was a lifetime member of V.F.W. #56 and American Legion #23, a member of DAV, The Retired Enlisted Association, a Past President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #55 and was the current President of the Retired Eagles Activity Club. Paul participated in numberous Veteran Day Parades and Memorial Day ceremonies at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Paul's survivors include his wife, one daughter, Gwendolyn Courter (Daryl), Valley Falls, Kansas; two sons, Harold Racine and Arthur Racine, both of Leavenworth; One step-daughter, Carmelle Smith, Harpswell, Maine, one step-son, Jim Duree, Leavenworth; Brother, Robert Racine (Pat), Wilmington, No. Carolina; sisters, Pauline Biggs (Robert), Mt. Vernon, Washington, Margaret Clayton (Sam), Chesapeake, Virginia, Linda Painchaud (George), Sabattus, Maine and Rita Racine, Waldoboro, Maine; four grandsons, four step grandsons and two step granddaughters. One brother preceded him in death. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. David Fontaine will officiate. Burial will be in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee St., Leavenworth, KS. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel with a Rosary to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Leavenworth Hospice, Shriners Children Hospitals or to donors choice.


Michael Maggio
Michael Maggio died Saturday, November 15, 2003. He was 88 years old. He was a World War II veteran and served for 30 years with the New York City Fire Department. He recently made his home in Lansing, KS.
Michael is survived by his son Robert and daughter-in-law Patti of Lansing, Kansas; his grandchildren Robert and Julie Maggio of Rockville, Maryland, Christopher and Rebecca Maggio of Liberty, Missouri, and Steven Maggio of Altamonte Springs, Florida. He is also surved by his great granddaughter Caroline Maggio of Rockville, Maryland. There will be a prayer service held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee Street, Leavenworth, KS. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Francis de Sales Church, 900 Ida Street, Lansing, KS. The Rev. Michael Stubbs will officiate. Following the funeral mass the body will be sent to the McCourt and Trudden Funeral Home in Farmingdale, NY for graveside service and burial on Friday, November 21, 2003 in the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.


Merrill L. Shepard
Merrill L. Shepard, Lt. Col., United States Army, (retired) died November 5, 2003. He was born August 24, 1920, in Humboldt, Kansas, the son of Charles B. and Mabel Vi Shepard. He graduated from Humboldt High School, Humboldt, Kansas, and completed three semesters of studies in Iola and Chanute, Kansas junior colleges before entering the military service as a private in December of 1940 with an artillery battery of the Kansas National Guard. During WW II he served 14 months in the Aleutian Islands with the Alaska Defense Command. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the army artillery after graduating from Officer Candidate Course at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, in June of 1953. After a few months of duty as an instructor at Camp Roberts, California, he volunteered for the airborne infantry, completed the necessary training, and was assigned to the 17th Airborne Division in Germany, making the last combat jump of the war with this unit. At the end of the war he was reassigned to the 82nd Airborne Division and served with this unit on occupation duty in Berlin until his discharge as a 1st Lieutenant in December of 1945. After the war he returned to his home in Marysville, Kansas, where he began a road contracting business. In November of 1947 Lt. Col Shepard organized an artillery battery of the Kansas National Guard and commanded the unit until his return to active duty during the Korean War in 1951. After a short tour of duty at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, as an instructor, he volunteered for duty with the new Special Forces (Green Berets) being organized at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After four years with this organization, both in the United States and Europe, he returned to the United States for duty with the 82nd Airborne Division. In the fall of 1958 he was one of the first men selected for training in freefall parachute training. As a result of this training he became officer-in-charge and coach of a United States Parachute Team that participated in international competitions in Yugoslavia and Bulgaria in 1959 and 1960. This group of Army parachutists was the nucleus of the group that became the Golden Knights, the Army's premier parachuting demonstration team. In the fall of 1963 he was a member of a group of parachutists that established a world record high altitude jump (43,500 fee ). He and members of the group were awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for their participation in this activity. His last tour of duty was as an instructor at the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. While in the service Lt. Col. Shepard completed a Bachelor of Science degree at Omaha University, Omaha, Nebraska, as well as courses at Kansas University that enabled him to earn a certification as a teacher in Kansas. After retirement from active duty in July of 1967, Lt. Col. Shepard was employed by Leavenworth School District #453 for twelve years. During this time he served as the Senior Officer Instructor of the Junior ROTC for five years, for four years as director of Project STAY, and as a work study coordinator in the special education department. During this period he also completed requirements for a Masters Degree in Education at Kansas University. After leaving the school district in 1981, Lt. Col. Shepard worked as a part-time instructor with the Outfront Adult Education Department of St. Mary college for a period of eight years. He remained active in community affairs, being selected as "Public Citizen of the Year" in 1995 by the Leavenworth Rotary Club. Lt. Col. Shepard married Dorothy Breit of Marysville, Kansas in December of 1948. Survivors include Mrs. Shepard of the home and three sons and daughter-in-laws: Michael and Judy Shepard, Bradley Shepard and Jan Jordan, Charles and Erminia Shepard, and daughter Jewel and her husband John Russel. Three granddaughters Rebecca Shepard, Amber Pike, and Laura Pike also survive. Visitation will be held at the Davis Funeral Chapel Sunday, November 9 from 4-6 p.m. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Graveside service with military honors will be held Monday, November 10 at 10 a.m. in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Pastor Ed Mease will officiate.

Morris F. Lewis
Morris F. Lewis retired Master Sergeant, United States Air Force passed awasy on October 20, 2003. He was 86 years old and had lived in Leavenworth with his wife of 55 years, Michealenne Lewis at their home. Morris F. Lewis served in the United States Army with the 31st Infantry after joining the Army in 1936. He served with distinction having fought gallantly on Bataan in the Philippines ultimately surrendering to the Japanese and then proceeding onto the infamous Death March, followed by internment as a Prisoner of War in Japan for 42 months. He was awarded for his personal actions in combat the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Silver Star, Bronze Star with V device and the Purple Heart. After his liberation from being a Prisoner of War in 1945 he returned to the United States and was rehabilitated at the US Hospital where he met his wife, Michealenne who was a nurse in his care. Morris upon completion of his recovery from his ordeals as a Prisoner of War was transferred to the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force he served in the Korean War and earned another Bronze Star and Presidential Unit Citation. Morris retired as a Master Sergeant in 1957. He continued to work until retiring in 1981. His final accomplishment in his life was his writing of his personal experiences in his book, A Soldier's Journal of Bataan and Survival. In his book he chronicles his experiences as a soldier and his love of country. In the end he defines what motivates men to survive in the harshest and most difficult times. When all hope seems lost it is the sheer will to overcome all odds and keeping the will to live motivated by the trust, sacrifice and caring of those around you that made the difference. It is from this belief that he made a personal difference fo all in his family and those that knew him. He resided here in Leavenworth, Kansas and is survived by his four great grand children. The final internment of Master Sergeant (R) Morris F. Lewis will be at Arlington National Military Cemetery with full military honors on 10 November 2003.


Leo Fitzpatrick
Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Leo Fitzpatrick, 75, Leavenworth, died Monday, Nov 3, 2003, at Colonial Manor in Lansing, KS. He was born June 11, 1928 in Von, AK., the son of Odor and Cassie Joyner Fitzpatrick. He married Beulah Lowe on March 15, 1950 in Kansas City, MO. He was career Military serving in the U.S. Army for 21 years. During his career he received 4 Good Conduct Medals, 2 National Defense Service Medals. He achieved a status of Marksman with a pistol sharpshooter with the rifle, and was an expert with the Carbine. Following his military career, he worked for the Lansing Correctional Facility. Leo's survivors include his wife, Beulah Fitzpatrick, Leavenworth. 4 daughters, Helen M. Cooper, Wichita, KS/ Variese J. Johnson and Cleo Dennis, Lansing, KS and Leora Williams, Leavenworth, KS. Son- Leroy E. Tanner, Leavenworth, KS. Brother, Bobby Gene Fitzpatrick, DeWitt, Ark. Sisters-Johnnie Mae Wheeler, Detroit, MI, Geraldine Harris, Louisville, KY. Easter Henderson, Kansas City, MO. 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline Fitzpatrick on April 22, 1958 and his sister Dosie Henderson of Kansas City, MO. Josephine O. Pierce
Josephine O. Pierce, 88, Leavenworth, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Broadway Heights in Leavenworth. She was born Nov. 3, 1914, in Hampton, MO., the daughter of Otho and Lillie Blankenship Offutt. On Jan. 18, 1939, she married Charles Pierce. He preceded her in death. She was a secretary of Great Western Manufacturing in Leavenworth. She was retired. Josephine was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Leavenworth.
She is survived by her daughter, Corliss Fox, Leavenworth; a son, Steven Pierce, State College, PA.; and four grandchildren, Douglas Fox,, Jeffrey Fox, Katie Pierce and Erin Pierce. Ruth Willis Stanley
Ruth Willis Stanley was born April 20, 1904 in Kansas City, Missouri, daughter of Orlando Mehlvilc and Amelia Magdalene Meier Willis. She died peacefully in St. John Hospital, Leavenworth, KS on Saturday, November 1, 2003. She was the widow of U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Stanley, Jr. whom she married on JUly 16, 1927, while he was in law school. They were married for 73 years at the time of Judge Stanley's death in 2001. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Louise S. Andrews, Lumberton, N.C.; Carolyn S. Lane, Leavenworth, KS.; Constance S. Yunghans, Kansas City, KS.; Susan S. Hoffman, Hampstead, N.C. She had 13 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grand children. Mrs. Stanley was a member of the Capt. Jesse Leavenworth Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; St. Alban's Anglican Church; and formerly a member of the Junior League of Kansas City, KS. For 15 years she served as volunteer chairman of the Social Welfare Department of the American Red Cross of Wyandotte County, KS. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Also, she was an avid and knowledgeable bird watcher. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee, Leavenworth, KS. Erma Walker, passed away Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at St. John Hospital, Leavenworth, KS. She was preceded in death by her husband Leon C. Walker in June of 1991, 3 sisters, Edna Ougman, Flora Butler, and Geneva Gilbert.She is survived by her sisters, Bernice Love, Minerva McRoy, Oneida Watson, Crystal Rorebaugh and Sheila Bright, also several nieces and nephews. Alice Virginia Adams Rife
Alice Virginia Adams Rife, of Kickapoo, Kansas, was born January 29, 1909 of William J. and Millian Dugan Adams and died on October 19th in Washington, D.C., where she had lived for two months. She grew up on the family farm, graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1928 and received a degree in home economics from Kansas State University in 1932. Alice taught for six years at a number of Kansas public schools, the last being Leavenworth High School. She married Clark A. Rife of Anthony, Kansas in 1938, and they resided in Omaha, Nebraska for 39 years, returning to live on the Kickapoo farm in 1978. Clark Rife died in 1994. Alice is survived by a sister, Emma Breeden of Arcadia, California, two sons, Lee of St. Paul, Minnesota and Jack of Washington, D.C., and five grandchildren, Greg, Steve, Joe, Katherine, and Luke Rife. Thomas Eugene Tavares, born May 4, 1932 in Pepeekeo, Hawaii, the eighth of nine children of Jacinto and Carrie Tavares. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Adreika Toccara Hamilton, 18, Leavenworth, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, in Kansas City from a car accident. She was born Oct. 9, 1985, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Glenn and Tamela P. Mitchell Hamilton.
Andrieka was a member of the Sunflower Baptist Church and was active in the junior choir and junior ushers board. She attended Leavenworth High School and was due to graduate in May of 2004. She was a member of POC Club for four years. She was a member of the Leavenworth Hot Steppers Drill Team. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Caretha Hamilton. Mark K. Hathorn, 48, Leavenworth, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. He was born Oct. 6, 1955, in Leavenworth, the son of Earl A. Hathorn Jr. He was a caregiver for his grandfather, Earl G. Peters. Mark is survived by his mother, Earlene P. AcArdle, Carrollton, Texas; two sisters, Pam Akers, Flower Mound, Texas, and Laura Moffett, Carrollton, Texas; and his grandfather, Earl G. Peters, Leavenworth. Frank R. Anderson
SFC (Ret) Frank R. Anderson, US Army 75, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003 at his home in Leavenworth. He was born May 5, 1928 in Baxter, Tennessee the son of Fowler Davis & Elizabeth (Hall) Anderson.
In 1964 he married Eveline Magdalena Anderson in Germany. She preceded him in death Oct. 27, 2000.
Frank served in the US Army as a Cryptographer. Folowing his retirement from the army he worked at the Kansas State Penitentiary as a Corrections Officer. Survivors include: Son -- Stephen Anderson, LV; Daughter -- Evelyn Schneider, LV; Brother -- William Anderson, Columbia, SC; and 1 Grandchild. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. in the Davis Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 16, 2003 from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral chapel. Vergie M. Miller
Vergie M. Miller, 92, Leavenworth, died Friday, October 10, 2003, at Presbyterian Manor in Kansas City, KS.
She was born July 28, 1911, in Hooser, KS, only daughter of Richard and Ida Levina Booher. In 1933 she married Olen R. Miller. The family moved to Lansing in 1943. She was a homemaker and lifetime Kansas resident. She was preceded in death by brothers Clarence and Owen Booher; husband Olen Miller; infant son Alvin Ray Miller; and daughter Glenda Miller. She is survived by daughters Carol Mustain and husband Stephen of Leavenworth; Ellen Filippi and husband Leonard of Lansing; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 14, at 2:30pm, at Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Muncie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 2:30 prior to service.

William Mansford Callender and Estie Coleman Callender
William Mansford Callender died Thurday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Cushing Hospital. He was born May 2, 1922, the son of John L. and Hattie L. Callender in Clifton Forge (Allegheny County), Va. He received his early education in the public schools of Clifton Forge and his B.S. in electrical engineering at A & T College, Greensboro, N.C., in 1949. At an early age he united with the First Baptist Church of Clifton Forge and was active with the Sunday School, choir and the Junior Deacon Board of that church. He was called to the U.S. Army to serve his country in 1942 and was discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1946. He was hired by the Justice Department, Bureau of Prisons in 1949, at Petersburg, Va., as a correctional officer. In 1958, he was transferred to the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth where he held the position of communication supervisor until he retired Dec. 25, 1975. During his lifetime he was affiliated with many organizations both professional and social. Some of these are: the John W. Barnes Lodge No. 305, Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia, F. & A. Masons Inc., American Newton Legion Post 94, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 56, a lifetime member of the NAACP, the SABCO Social Club and AARP (all of Leavenworth), NARFE, Certified Electronics Technical Association and the Electronic Technicians Association International. On May 6, 1960, he married Estie Coleman of Petersburg, Va. They moved to Leavenworth and have resided here since. She died Oct. 4, 2003. He is survived by a sister, Hazel H. Callender, and a brother, Randolf B. Callender, both of Clifton Forge, Va.; a nephew, Godfrey Callender, Boston; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon.
Estie Coleman Callender died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at Cushing Hospital. She was born Sept. 23, 1922, the daughter of Adolphus and Mary Dora (Pegram) Coleman, in Petersburg, Va. She was educated in the Petersburg public school system. She married William M. Callender on May 6, 1960. They moved to Leavenworth and she became a homemaker for the Callender family. He preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 2003. She united with the Independent Baptist Church and became an avid worker there. Following her husband's lead, she became a lifetime member of American Newton Legion Post 94 Ladies Auxiliary. She was also affiliated with the Army Mothers, the Cooks Domestic Club and was a lifetime member of the NAACP.

John J. Will, Jr.
John J. Will, Jr. 78, Leavenworth, KS died Sunday, October 5, 2003 at his home. He was born February 27, 1925 in Leavenworth, the son of John J. and Anna Gates Will. John married Jean Dawes on May 5, 1951 in Leavenworth, KS. John served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a Parmacist Mate and trained with the Marines for the invasion of Japan. The Ship was on the way to Japan when Harry Truman authorized the Atomic Bomb be dropped on Hiroshima. The ship was sent to Pearl Harbor and remained in Honolulu until July 1946. After returning to Leavenworth, John worked for the US Federal Penitentiary Service. He worked as a correctional officer and after 28 years retired as a counselor in 1975. John became interested in the history of Leavenworth and began buying Leavenworth artifacts and souvenirs in about 1970. He also researched early Leavenworth and the early settlers. John loved to hunt and fish. Joahn and Jean had an antique business and traveled doing antique shows. In August of 1998 John suffered a severe stroke and was paralyzed on the left side. He was confined to a wheelchair for the last 5 years and was cared for at home by his family. John was a member of the Kansas State Historical Society, Leavenworth County Historical Society, Heisey Collectors of America, Lansing Historical Society. Survivors include his wife-Jean Will of the home. Children, Margaret A. 2 Sisters, Dolores Halling, Leavenworth, KS, and Jane Snail, Wheaton, IL.; 9 Grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents and 2 infant sons. Funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Thursday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee Leavenworth, KS. Burial will be in the Mt. Muncie Cemetery. Paul William Jenkins
Paul William Jenkins, Colonel United States Army (retired) was born in Newkirk, Oklahoma July 6, 1918, the son of Charles Brosius Jenkins and Mary Ann Melinda Armstrong. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Artillery, October 22, 1942 after attending officer candidate school at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. In April 1943, he was shipped to North Africa where he joined the Second Armored Division. He participated in the invasion of Sicily, going ashore early on D-day. In November 1943, he moved with the division to England to prepare for the invasion of France, subsequently landing on D-day plus 3. Col. Jenkins participated in all the European campaigns from the breakthrough at St. Lo through the Battle of the Bulge ending WWII on the Elbe river just west of Berlin. The division entered Berlin as the first American occupation forces there on July 4, 1945. After providing the security for the Potsdam Conference, the division returned to western Germany for occupation duties. After World War II, Col. Jenkins served four overseas tours in Puerto Rico, Germany and Turkey. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal with V device and one oak leaf cluster, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Staff Medal and many other campaign and service medals and ribbons. He retired from the Army at Fort Leavenworth after 30 years of active duty in 1970 and had made his home here since that time. In 1951, he married Mary Lee Roby at Ft. Hood, Texas who survives at the home. Other survivors include six children, Paul William Jr., Springfield, MO; Nancy Louise, Overland Park, KD; James Bruce, Pocatello, IN; David Allen, Flanders, IN; Martha Lynn, Washington, DC: Marilyn Hamilton, Shaw Air Force Base, Ft. Sumter, SC, and eight grandchildren. He has one sister, Mary Ann Pool of Otis, KS and was preceded in death by a son, Robert Charles, three brothers and one sister. Col. Jenkins was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Retired Officer Association, the Second Armored Division Association and the Leavenworth Rotary Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Leavenworth Historical Society, and Cushing Memorial Hospital. Memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, The Rev. Michael Munro will officiate. Inurnment with Military Honors will be in the Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery. No visitation is planned, cremation. The Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Edward A. Janas
Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Edward A. Janas, 68, of Leavenworth, slipped peacefully from his earthly family and friends on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2003, in Houston. Ed was visiting his Army buddies at a reunion in Houston.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with a rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Leavenworth. Burial will be at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Edward A. Janas was born on May 8, 1935, in Holyoke, Mass. He was the son of Joseph and Helen (Harackiewicz) Janas. He grew up in a military family and lived most of his childhood in San Antonio. Ed married Rosemary Pipkin on Feb. 5, 1955.
Ed served his country in the U.S. Army for 31 years from 1955 to 1986. In 1955, Ed enlisted in the Army and rose through the ranks to a non-commissioned officer. He was selected to attend the Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., and was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry. After completing Rotary Wing training at Fort Rucker, Ala., he served three tours of duty in Vietnam and received numberous awards and honors throughout his career including: the Distinguished Flying Cross, one Oak Leaf Cluster; Bronze Star Medal, two Oak Leaf Clusters; Meritorious Service Medal, two Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Medal, seven awards, Air Medal for Valor, 3 awards; Army Commendation Medal, one Oak Leaf Cluster; Meritorious Unit Citation; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal, six; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm; Parachutist Badge and Master Army Aviator Badge.
Ed received a BA in History from Park College in August 1977 and a master's detgree in administration of justice from Wichita State University in May 1994. For more than 20 years Ed has called Leavenworth home. In September 1986, Ed became a Deputy Sheriff the Leavenworth County Sheriff's office. In June 1989, he was appointed director of Community Corrections for Leavenworth and Atchison counties. In June 1993, he was appointed director of Public Works for Leavenworth County. He taught as an adjunct faculty professor at Park College and was a substitute teacher in the Fort Leavenworth School District. Ed enjoyed local politics and served on the Airport Advisory Board. In 1990 he received the Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award and was honored for his military career in 1998 at the KU Veterans Day Awards ceremony. Ed was a member of Immaculate Conception-Saint Joseph Parish, Post No. 56 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and Knights of Columbus of Leavenworth. Ed's family and friends lived all across the United States and he enjoyed traveling to visit them with his wife. He spent most of the last few years visiting family and friends and his Army buddies and attending reunions. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Janas of the home; his son, Michael Janas; his daughters, Catherine Janas Wittlif and her husband, Lance, Laura Janas Gasbarre and her husband, Tony; Deborah Janas; Joann Janas Bender and her husband, Jeffrey. Grandchildren: Caitlin, Edward, April, Jennifer, Aubrey, Anthony, Briana, and Eliana. His mother and father; brother, Joseph Emil Janas; and daughter, Mary Kathryn; preceded him in death. Ed was a loving husband, father and grandpa ("poppa"), loyal friend and patriot. His family and countless friends will deeply miss him. The family requests contributions in Ed's name to any of the folowing: Park College, Wichita State University, American Heart Association, and Vietnam Veteran's Association. Reception to follow burial in Miege Hall at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
