HENRY A. MARTENS
Henry A. Martens passed away at his home in Leavenworth on Friday, December 17, 2004. He was 72. Henry was born September 16, 1932, to Henry and Mary Martens in Shawnee. He attended Shawnee Schools and then served in the US Coast Guard. He married Shirley L. Pfeifer on December 1, 1951 in Olathe. Henry Martens started his career as a Manor Bread route salesman. His bread route included the local Chevrolet dealer who was so impressed with Henry's selling skills that he recruited Henry to sell cars. After just a few years selling, Henry became a partner of Beck-Dennis Chevrolet in Olathe. Four years later Henry accepted a sales manager position with Guy Pine Chrysler-Plymouth of Mission. Henry left his job a few years later and was sought out by Chrysler Corporation to open his own auto dealership. Henry and Shirley moved to Leavenworth in 1963 when they purchased the Chrysler-Plymouth franchise. Henry Martens owned his store for more than 30 years. Henry's hard work and love of the automobile business allowed him to expand. At one point in time, Henry owned and operated five automobile dealerships with his five sons in Leavenworth, Platte City, MO, Lee's Summit, MO and Warsaw, MO. Henry and Shirley Martens currently own the Chevrolet-Cadillac dealership in Leavenworth. Henry Martens was a charter member of the Olathe Lions Club and member of the Leavenworth Elks, the American Legion and AUSA. He was also a lifetime member of the Belgian-American Club of Greater Kansas City and sponsored many of the Allied officers from Belgium who attended CGSC at Fort Leavenworth. His many accomplishments included growing and harvesting grapes and producing wine for all of his friends and family. He also was a pilot for many years. Proud of his Belgian heritage, Henry made two trips to Belgium to visit his mother's birthplace and to visit his many friends he made through the Fort Leavenworth sponsorship program. There are many families in the country of Belgium who are sad today of Henry's passing but are also grateful to have know Henry and experienced his generosity. Henry Martens had a lifelong passion for being outdoors and for working his land with his farm equipment. Henry enjoyed cutting firewood and even more relaxing at home in front of a fire on a chilly day. A good day for Henry was mowing his acreage, planting trees and shrubs and making something more beautiful than it was before he started. Henry is survived by his wife, Shirley, of 53 years and by his five sons and daughter-in-laws, Tom and Sylvia Martens, Leavenworth, Dale and Ann Martens, Lee's Summit, MO, Tony and Gretchen Martens, Platte City, MO, Hank Martens, Joplin MO, Jeff and Melanie Martens, Leavenworth, 12 Grandchildren and two great grandchildren. VERA URBAN
We are celebrating the life and passing of Vera Urban who joined her Lord and savior on August 24, 2004. Vera chose to leave this world after enjoying a wonderful visit with her sons, daughter,daughter-in-law, granddaughter and great grandson, who all flew to Idaho to support her in her last struggle with a bout of pneumonia. Vera's condition improved dramatically when the family arrived and after three days with her family, she passed peacefully and quietly in the arms of the God whom she loved and worshipped throughout her life. Vera was born in Pattonsburg, MO on June 15, 1914, to Oliver and Laura Moore. She married Fred W. Urban and in 1947 they moved to Leavenworth, where they jointly owned and worked at Urban Music Store. They raised two sons, Chris and Phil, and a daughter, Jeanene. After Fred went home to be with Jesus, Vera remained with her family in Leavenworth. In later years, she was a member of the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band, playing the piano for the group as they entertained the elderly members of the community with song and music. As her physical capabilities began to diminish, she resided at Homestead Assisted Living in Leavenworth and thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the other residents and staff, as well as participating in all the activities provided. In 2002, Vera moved to Idaho to be cared for by her daughter, Jeanene, and Ellen Hampton, a wonderful caregiver whom the Lord made available just when Vera needed her. Vera's final two years were difficult as her physical body began to tire, but her spirit and positive attitude were a tremendous blessing to all those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her smile and twinkling blue eyes touched the hearts of every single person who saw, whether they knew her or not! She fulfilled God's work for her on this earth by being an inspiration throughout her physical struggles and by lifting the spirits of those around her each and every day in these final two years. Visitation will be from 4-6pm Sunday, August 29, at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held for Vera at 1pm Monday, August 30 at the Davis Funeral Chapel.
