ARTHUR ALBERT JAHN
| ||||||||||||||||
Arthur Jahn, 94 years old, passed away on Sunday, November 15,
2009. Mr. Jahn was born at Cushing Hospital in Leavenworth on January 7,
1915. He was the son of Emma Barben Jahn and Albert Herman Jahn. On
April 12, 1936, he married Lucille F. White, also from Leavenworth. Mrs.
Jahn preceded him in death on January 7, 2004. Mr. and Mrs. Jahn had four
daughters, Sandra L. Harrison, Leavenworth, Donna L. DeMet, Harshaw,
Wisconsin, Gloria J. Mercer, Tustin Ranch, California, and Darlene A.
Lynch, Franklin, Tennessee, as well as seven grandchildren and two great
grandsons. An infant daughter, a grandson and Mr. Jahn¿s brother,
Howard, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Jahn lived his entire life in Leavenworth. He started in the grocery business with his father when he was 12 years old at 4th and Spruce Streets in Leavenworth. In 1940, he went into partnership in the grocery business with his younger brother, Howard. Shortly afterwards, both were drafted into World War II. During World War II, Mr. Jahn served in the Air Force, 414th Fighter Group Operations for three-and-a-half years. He was stationed in several locations in the U.S. before being dispatched to Iwo Jima, 600 miles from Japan, where his group of 900 men landed on the beach. From Iwo Jima he was sent to Tinian, Guam, and several other locations, before returning to Iwo Jima. After the war, his group traveled in three B-29s to Okinawa, and then to Clark Field in Manila in the Philippines, before returning home to Leavenworth in 1946. When the brothers returned from war service, they bought the Leavenworth Transportation Company at 5th and Spruce Streets, which originally operated streetcars, then buses, in Leavenworth. Their parents, Albert and Emma Jahn, owned two four-plex apartment buildings at 4th and Spruce, so by buying the additional property, the two brothers had the entire north side of the block on Spruce Street to build their new supermarket, Jahn¿s Shopping Center, which opened in 1955. The brothers also owned Jahn¿s Shop-Rite grocery store located at 7th and Kiowa. They continued together in the grocery business until Arthur bought out his brother¿s interests in 1972. Mr. and Mrs. Jahn also owned The Yarn Shoppe, which was located in the same building as the Jahn¿s Shop-Rite grocery store. In 1956, the two brothers formed a new corporation, Recreation Enterprises, with another long-time Leavenworth resident and friend, Jimmy Clark. This new corporation purchased Holman¿s Nursery and the Cory property, which included several acres in the 5000 block of South 4th Street. In 1959, Recreation Enterprises built Skyway Lanes and SMAKS, a fast-food restaurant. A few years later, they sold several acres behind the bowling alley to Hallmark¿s Select Products Division, and additional 4th Street frontage to Hardee¿s restaurant, First National Bank and Western Sizzler Steakhouse. Mr. Jahn attended Leavenworth public schools and graduated from Leavenworth Senior High School in 1933, a year after the school, located at 4th and Chestnut, had burned. Arthur and Howard Jahn, along with several additional business partners, purchased the Manufacturer¿s State Bank in Leavenworth in 1961. Mr. Jahn served on the Board of Directors of Bancor, which owned Manufacturer¿s State Bank, and was Chairman of the Board when the local bank was sold to Commerce Bank in 1993. After retiring from the grocery business in 1978, he and his wife traveled extensively around the world, including numerous cruises to various locations in Alaska, Mexico and Europe. In 1997, Mr. Jahn wrote a book about his life, Looking Back to 1915, which was published by another long-time Leavenworth resident, Johnny Johnston. In addition to 51 years in the grocery business and his other business interests, Mr. Jahn served with various community organizations throughout his life. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, and was a member of the Elks Club for over 40 years. He also was a member of St. Paul¿s Lutheran Church, Leavenworth Lion¿s Club, Leavenworth City and County Planning Commission and the Leavenworth Country Club. Mr. Jahn also owned rental properties in Leavenworth and Scottsdale, Arizona. As life-long residents of Leavenworth, Lucille and Arthur Jahn donated back to the community where they lived and did business for so many years. Their significant contributions to local projects included the Leavenworth Public Library, which named the Arthur and Lucille Jahn Meeting Room in their honor. Additional community involvement included significant contributions to the City¿s Lady Liberty restoration, the Carillon Memorial at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, the David Kaaz Health Center, St. Paul¿s Lutheran Church, and the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum, where a 1932 V8 Roadster and a 1989 oak upright ¿Owl¿ slot machine were donated. Mr. Jahn is survived by his four daughters, seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
