Alice Margaret McCart, 77, passed away on April 26, 2024, in Overland Park, KS. Alice was born on February 19, 1947, in Leavenworth, KS, to Kenneth Alvin McCart and Margaret Elizabeth (Mills) McCart. The daughter of an Army recruiter, she moved around the country and lived in Michigan, Texas, and Iowa. It was in Mesquite, TX, that she met and eventually married Robert McBride in June of 1969, after earning a double Bachelor of Arts with honors in German and French (1969) at the University of Kansas. During her junior year she was an exchange student in Germany and France. After the wedding, she and Robert moved to Luke Air Force Base, AZ, and spent a short time there. She then went back to the University of Kansas to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching and German (1971), and a Master's in Journalism (1983).

Alice and Robert had three children before they divorced: Elizabeth, Mark, and Maggie. In 1979, Alice started working in the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS translating German and French, was a production editor for Military Review magazine, military history, and an English teacher for new officers as the first civilian woman faculty in 104 years. She stayed in Leavenworth until 1986, when she moved to Maryland for a year. Then it was off to Oak Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago. She had a successful career as the managing editor of Healthcare Financial Management Association before heading back to school to earn a law degree from the Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1993. Shortly after obtaining her JD, she opened her own law practice in the historic Monadnock Building in downtown Chicago. After a few years, once all her kids had left the nest, she headed back to Washington DC and was the managing editor for American Health Lawyers Association, then the American Corporate Counsel Association publications. She was living in DC on September 11, 2001, and held that experience in her heart for the rest of her life. She stayed in DC a few more years before heading back to the place that was always home: Kansas. She worked there for many years with her lifelong friend and colleague, Jon Tomes, of Veterans Press, Inc. and EMR Legal, Inc. becoming one of the nation's leading experts in HIPAA compliance and other healthcare-related privacy law, electronic health information standardization, and the editor of Servicemember's Legal Guide, 5th ed. (2005), among other publications.

Alice developed a love for running in the 1980s that stayed with her for over a decade. She participated in various 5Ks, fun runs, and marathons, including two Marine Corp marathons, through the years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and other creative endeavors. She loved watching old movies, murder mystery TV shows, and MacGyver. She also loved to play the piano and, in her youth, she was a top clarinet player in her high school's band. She had a special relationship with nature and the environment was an interest of hers for most of her life. She became a vegetarian in the 80s and a vegan in the 90s and loved sharing vegan recipes with just about anyone who showed even a passing interest. She kept a blog for a few years about her vegan adventures in DC and Chicago. Throughout her life, she always offered her editing skills to anyone who needed them for any type of book, professional paper, or just to help young professionals polish their resumes and cover letters. As her children got older, she was able to travel to faraway places to spend time with her son in Alaska and her oldest daughter in Bermuda and Puerto Rico.

Alice is survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, and one great grandson.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4 to 6 pm on May 3rd at Davis Funeral Chapel at 531 Shawnee Street, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the American Diabetes Association.
