Barbara "Pat" Whitmore Haskins, 89, of Leavenworth, Kansas passed away peacefully at her daughter's home on March 29, 2024 after a long illness.

Pat was born in Ellsworth, Maine on June 5,1934 to Merrill F. and Gertrude Yeaton Whitmore.  She spent her childhood living in both Ellsworth and Bar Harbor, Maine.  A true "Maine-iac", she loved all that her home state had to offer, including the ocean, lighthouses, beaches, pine trees, Cadillac Mountain, ships, boats and of course, lobster.

She attended the University of Maine at Orono where she met her husband, Franklin C. "Lin" Haskins (LTC, ret).  Pat went on to complete a Medical Technology degree in Detroit, Michigan.  Immediately following their marriage, Lin was commissioned in the US Army and Pat began a life of travel and exploring other countries as a military spouse.  Along the way, Pat and Lin welcomed three children, Debby, Curt and Dave.
In 1974, the family was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and the family finally found a permanent home base.

In the late 1970-s, Pat re-entered the workforce as a Medical Technologist for the Leavenworth County Health Department, where she ran the laboratory for over 35 years until retiring at the young age of 80!  Even after retirement, she continued to enjoy many treasured friendships from her Health Department days.

Not one to sit idly by, Pat enjoyed many years of volunteering with the Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society and the Catholic Charities Food Pantry.  She valued the experiences, but even more meaningful were the friendships she made and being able to continue to give back to her community.

After Lin and Pat divorced, she was fortunate to meet an amazing Leavenworth man, Jesse Chappell.  They enjoyed flea markets, rocks, gems, travel and spending time with their grandchildren.  Pat and Jesse were devoted companions for over 20 years until his death in 2010.

In her spare time, Pat enjoyed playing Yahtzee, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles and going out to eat with her many friends.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her ex-husband, Lin, and her son, Curt.  She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Scharnhorst, her husband, Paul and their son, Randy and his wife, Hannah; her son, David and his wife, Sherry and their children, Melissa Granillo and her husband, Antonio; and their son, Jonathan; and Curt's son, Michael Haskins and daughter, Michaela Koch.  She is also survived by several great-grandchildren.

There will be a visitation/celebration of life at Davis Funeral Chapel on Saturday, May 4th, 2024 from 1 to 3 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made directly to any of the groups that Pat cherished and supported over the years: the Leavenworth Animal Welfare Society, the Catholic Charities Food Pantry or the American Cancer Society.

Our family would like to thank the University of Kansas Cancer Center staff, the Three Oaks Hospice staff and everyone who was a part of Mom's life and gave her joy.
