Colonel Betty McCoy "Retired", 62, died in her home in Lansing, KS, Friday, October 25, 2013 from a long term illness. A memorial service will be held at Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, KS, Friday, November 1, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. Father William McEvoy of Saint Francis de Sales Church, Lansing, KS, will conduct the service. Interment will be in the spring for family and friends at the United States Air Force Academy Cemetery, Colorado Springs, CO.
Colonel McCoy is survived by her husband, Colonel Michael McCoy, USAF (Ret), Lansing, KS; her daughter, Tracy Lynn McCoy, Copperas Cove, TX; her son, James McCoy, O'Fallon, IL; and her sisters: Lieutenant Colonel Bennie Katilus, USAFR (Ret), Stockton, CA, and Glenda Brown, Rivera, TX. She was pre-deceased by her parents, C. Glynn and Norma Rae Isdale, Westlake, LA, and grandparents, Vester and Katherine Isdale, DeQuincy, LA, and Bennie and Wessie Mae Smith, Brookhaven, MS.
Colonel McCoy was born February 26, 1951, in DeQuincy, LA, and moved to Kingsville, TX in 1954 where she attended elementary and high schools. She received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Texas-Galveston in 1975 and a Masters in Business Administration from Webster University in 1986. After working in pediatrics at Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital, San Antonio, TX, Colonel McCoy joined the Air Force in 1976. In the service she worked as an operating room nurse, flight nurse, and completed her career as an individual mobilization augmentee for the Surgeon General offices of Headquarters, United States Air Forces Europe and Headquarters, Air Mobility Command and as a nurse administrator with the Surgeon General, Headquarters, United States Air Force. Her duties stations included Travis Air Force Base, CA, Scott Air Force Base, IL, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Maxwell Air Force Base, AL, and Fort Dietrich, MD.
The family gives recognition and thanks to the staffs of Home Instead Senior Care, Overland Park, KS, Saint John Hospital, Leavenworth, KS, and Hospice Partners of Kansas, Basehor, KS, whose assistance in the last days of Colonel McCoy's life ensured her transition to her final assignment was accomplished with care and dignity.
