On September the 15 th of 2024, Cora Alice (Cowing) Thoos, 82, passed away at North Kansas City Hospital after battling a lengthy illness. Cora was born to Fred and Cora (Blockburger) Cowing on December 29,1941 in Leavenworth, KS. She was one of five siblings, Mary, Fred Jr.,
Robert, and Josephine.
Cora lived in Leavenworth for most of her life until 2014 when she moved to Atchison, Kansas. She attended Leavenworth High School and graduated in 1960. She married Thomas Karl Eismann Jr. in December of that year and they had three children together, Christina, Thomas
III, and Katherine. They later divorced in 1968. She then married Joseph Scott Thoos in 1969, and they had one son together, Joseph Jr.
She was a home maker and worked various jobs outside of the home throughout her life consisting of the following: Smith's Drug Store, Smacks Drive-In, Sears, NuWay, Meyer's Dairy Store, Walmart, and USD #453, retiring from the school district in 2007 after over 20 years.
On October 19 th , 1974 the Cowing sisters, Cora and Mary, became entrepreneurs and business partners opening A&L Wig and Beauty Salon in Leavenworth. The business name A&L was created using their middle names, Cora Alice, and Mary Louise. Cora was known for her vibrant personality, love of family and friends, and enjoyed going to casinos, camping, boating, and picnics, as well as cheering on her Chiefs, KU Jayhawks and the Royals. We also can't go without mentioning her delicious home cooked dishes and meals.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Louise Rich, and her two brothers, Fred Cowing Jr. and Robert John Cowing. She leaves behind her loving husband, Joe, of 55 years, daughter Chris (Brian) Sanders of Lansing, KS, son Tom Eismann III of Lansing, KS,
daughter Kathy (Mark) Peckham of Thornton, CO, son, Joe Thoos Jr. of Leavenworth, KS, and her sister Josephine (Gary) Olson of Leavenworth, KS, in addition to nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved very much.
Visitation will be held at Davis Funeral Chapel on Monday, October 7, 2024 from 10:30 A.M. to noon. Memorial service will follow at noon at the funeral chapel. Interment will be at the Leavenworth VA National Cemetery.
