Obituary

David (Dave) Martin Spangler was born to Lewis (d. 2008) and Nancy (Ellis) Spangler in Kansas City, KS, on June 20, 1960. He graduated from Washington High School in Kansas City, KS, in 1978. He is survived by his mother, Nancy Spangler of Bella Vista, AR, his children Beau David Spangler, Ellis Young Spangler (Sydney), and Jeffrey Martin Spangler (Kendal), siblings Michael Spangler (Shannon), Lewis M. Spangler (Kenna), Catherine Spangler (Gary Porter), and Douglas Spangler, as well as four grandchildren, ten nieces and nephews, and 15 grand-nieces and nephews. Dave also leaves behind honorary stepchildren Alexandria Steyer (Andrew) and Peter Tremble (Erin), and four honorary step-grandchildren.

Dave's long-time friend, David ("Herb") Herbert, was with Dave through thick and thin, to the very end.

Dave's passions included food, family, friends, and fun. He enjoyed cycling, road trips, and sleeping under the stars.

Dave was an accomplished chef and delighted in feeding others. In 1997, he realized a long-held dream and opened Marfield's Irish Pub in Leavenworth, KS, where he built a loyal clientele over the next 20 years. Thereafter, Dave continued to cook, tirelessly feeding family and friends.

Dave was a reader, thinker and conversationalist who never met a stranger. He – along with his beloved dog, Harrison – made a new friend on every street corner. Dave offered help when help was needed and asked for nothing in return. Through his many friendships and as a member of Pilgrim Community Church in Leavenworth, KS, Dave built a village of people who cared for one another and their larger community. He will be missed by many.

Dave's family offers their heartfelt gratitude to his caregivers at the University of Kansas Cancer Center, including Dr. Haung, Dr. Gan, and RNs Emily and Lindsey; Jen, Angela and Ty of St. Croix Hospice; and the outstanding caregivers at Olathe Hospice House.

Thank you to David "Herb" Herbert, Cheryl Hieler, Pistol Geouge, Robert and Robin Frank, and Pastor Cape Rust for the friendship, kindness and love you showed Dave in his final days.

A Celebration of Life will be held October 19, 2024, from 4-6 pm at Pilgrim Community Church, Leavenworth, KS.
