Dennis Eugene Schmidling (71), lifelong resident of Leavenworth, passed away at his home on September 26th, 2021.

Dennis was born on May 6th, 1950 to Helen and Maurice Schmidling Sr. He attended Immaculata High School and served in the United States Army. He enjoyed watching sports, being with family, and laughing loudly. He was a dog lover, and earlier in his life he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was always a person to vent to, for his entire family, always ready with a story of his own or with gentle advice. He was the first to offer a loud political opinion, but somehow always made it into a joke that was never divisive. After struggling with the loss of his wife earlier this year, Dennis found his new purpose as he by became a very active volunteer with Leavenworth Interfaith Community of Hope, where he learned a whole new level of compassion and empathy.

Dennis was preceded in death by his best friend, and wife, Judy Schmidling earlier this year. He had been a devoted caregiver to her for many years as her health declined. He is survived by his children; Jeff (Sheri) Schmidling and Debi (Charlie) Mohan. His grandchildren Jenna and Andrew Schmidling, Kassie (Matt) Davis, Kara Karnosky-Olson, and Kaleb Karnosky. As well as his 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving siblings Maurice (Dorothy) Schmidling Jr., Sheila (Thomas) Kohout and Karen (David) Wallsmith. The list could continue forever with the bonds Dennis had with nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends. He cared deeply for people and was always there if anyone needed him.

There will be a visitation held to honor the life and love of both Dennis and Judy from 5pm to 7pm at Davis Funeral Chapel on Thursday, October 7th with a committal serivce taking place at 9am on Friday, October 8th at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. As unfortunate as the pandemic was in delaying Judy's services, we know they both would be happy to be celebrated together. Two best friends with big hearts and a giant love for each other have been forever reunited and though they will both be deeply missed by those of us left behind, this eternal reunion should be a cause for joy for us all. The family asks that though Dennis is mourned here, you all take a moment to remember to love as much as he did; with a warm smile, a big laugh, and an open heart. Memorial contributions may be given to Leavenworth Interfaith Community of Hope.
