As a young man, he served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Once discharged, he spent the majority of his professional career in data processing, working for and retiring from Fort Leavenworth. He spent his retirement traveling and spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed amateur photography, mostly taking pictures of Kansas monuments and nature, as well as coin collecting with his wife and had an interest in museums and history. He loved talking about the good old days. He is remembered as a kind man who loved his family and cared deeply for his wife, children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his friends and loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Heinrich and Maria Anna Wilke-Macke, maternal grandparents Josef and Dora (Fock) Latus; father, Joseph Henry Kampsen; mother, Clara Amelia (Latus) Kampsen; sister, Edna D. Kampsen; sister, Rita and her husband Beryl Heitmann; sisters-in-law Doris (wife of Francis Kampsen) and Margaret (wife of Robert Kampsen). Don is survived by his wife, Joyce Kampsen of Lansing, KS; daughter, Julie Kampsen-Lemke of Olathe, KS; son James Kampsen of Lansing, KS; four grandchildren, Allison Kelly, Zoe Lemke, Harrison Lemke, and Zachary Lemke; one great grandchild, Finnegan Kelly; brothers and their wives, Francis Kampsen of Topeka, KS, Elmer and Donna Kampsen of Visalia, CA, Norbert and Nancy Kampsen of Topeka, KS, Ray and Peggy Kampsen of Vassar, KS, and Bob Kampsen of Dundee, FL; sisters and their husbands, Betty and Nolan Patton of Topeka, KS, and Helen and Everett King of Topeka, KS.

Visitation will be 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., Friday, October 22nd, 2021, at Davis Funeral Chapel with the Funeral Service at 1:00 P.M. Burial will follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.
