Obituary

Gene Thompson, (December 5, 1928- July 19, 2021) formerly of Easton, Kansas, died surrounded by family at Autumn Leaves Memory Care.  Gene was born at home in Easton, Kansas to Florence Courtney Thompson and Ernest Thompson, youngest of three children. Gene married his high school sweetheart, Dolores Gwartney, December 22, 1951, at their childhood church in Easton, where he was a member until it closed. He graduated from Easton High School (1947). He proudly served in the Marine Corp from 1948-1952, stationed at Paris Island, SC.

Gene remodeled the Oak Hill School, District 11, into a home where they resided until Gene built their final home on Millwood Road, residing there 46 years of their 65 married years. Gene owned a gas delivery company supplying gas to farmers until 1964.  Gene was a carpenter by trade and worked at Abernathy Furniture, built and remodeled homes, and built Pizza Huts in the Kansas City area. He was a member of the Kansas City Carpenters' union working several years on construction of KCI airport.  Gene raised Angus cattle, loved all animals, especially his horses. He enjoyed farming on his childhood home with brother, Gerald.

A life-long member of First Baptist Church, Gene was actively involved in the bus ministry, VBS, prison ministry and blood drives, himself a several gallon donor.

Gene and Dolores lovingly cared for daughter, Janice until her passing in 2005.  Gene had many friends, never met a stranger and was quite the jokester. Gene and Dolores moved to Oklahoma in 2017. He was proceeded in death by his parents, wife, brother, Gerald, sister, Faye Noll, daughter, and grandson.

Gene is survived by daughter, Cheryl Hooper (Mike Evans) and grandson, Jeffrey Hooper, Edmond, OK, granddaughter, Trish (Richard) Moran, brother-in-law, James (Amy) Gwartney, Tallahassee, FL, and two great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, numerous nieces, nephews, many loving friends and neighbors.

Visitation will be at Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee St., Leavenworth, KS, Sunday, July 25, 2021 from 5 to 7 PM. Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church, 340 N 13th St., Leavenworth, KS, Monday, July 26, 2021 at10:30 am, burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Easton, Kansas. Memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, 340 N 13th St, Leavenworth, KS 66048. Arrangements entrusted to Davis Funeral Chapel.
