Lt. Colonel Harold Lee "Tab" Hunter (Ret.) passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, in Leavenworth, Kansas.
Born on December 31, 1938, to Harold Hunter and Wilma Marmon, Tab lived a life of service, honor, and deep faith. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1956 and soon after began his
distinguished career in the United States Army, where he served his country with courage and pride. A three-time Purple Heart recipient, Tab's bravery and leadership left a lasting legacy. Following a long and honorable military career, he retired in Leavenworth, Kansas, where he continued to serve his community with compassion and integrity.
Known lovingly as Tab by family and friends, he was active in local service — serving on various
committees and as a town commissioner. His commitment to his community mirrored the same
dedication he gave to his country.
Tab is survived by his devoted wife, Maxine Hunter; and his children: - Dana Stone and daughter
Sarah, of Wake Forest, North Carolina - Lori Hunter Barros and husband Dr. Thomas Barros, and their
children Thomas and Emerson, of Swansboro, North Carolina - Dyan Sherman and husband Chris
Sherman, of Fayetteville, North Carolina - Stepson Brett Atkerson and his significant other Valerie, and
his children Ryan and Brittany
He is also survived by his brother, Larry Hunter, and sister, Pam Hunter, as well as seven
great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his later years.
In addition to his family at home, Tab was blessed with an abundance of international military families
who became like his own throughout his decades of service — lifelong friends who will remember his
leadership, humor, and generosity.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Wilma Hunter, and his sister, Judith (Judy)
Robertson, who passed shortly after his death on November 1, 2025.
Tab will be remembered for his distinguished military career, unwavering devotion to family and
community, love of history, and passion for classic cars.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Church of the Open Door,
located at 4800 S. 20th St. Trafficway, Leavenworth, KS 66048, with visitation from 1:00–3:00 PM,
followed by the funeral service at 3:00 PM. Committal service will be Monday, July 6, 2026, 11 A.M. at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
