Obituary

Herbert Eugene Mayfield Jr., 82, of Leavenworth, Kansas died peacefully at home on November 24, 2023.  Herb was born to Virginia Arnold and Herbert Eugene Mayfield Sr. on April 4, 1941 in Springfield, Missouri.  Herb was a quick witted man with exceptional talent for working on cars and buildings.  He had an adventurous childhood, building tree houses and biking around the neighborhood.  As a young adult, he worked as a draftsman for Fasco Industries, but in his free time got a thrill out of racing his '58 Corvette.  He was a member of East Avenue Baptist Church and taught 4th grade Sunday School there.  In 1973, he moved to Leavenworth to work for Army Engineering Plans & Services at Fort Leavenworth until he retired in 2003.  Herb loved historical preservation and was the first Historical Coordinator for DIS at the Fort.  For his business, Mayfield Rentals, he enjoyed restoring his properties to their original era.  He was the kind of landlord that renters appreciate.  Herb was an avid collector of antiques and a visit to his house was like visiting a museum.  As a member of AFGE, he was committed to improving workers' compensation and workplace conditions and he served as the Executive Chief Steward for a period of time.  He looked forward to his annual Superbowl Party with his life-long friends from the Fort and was a faithful fan of the KC Chiefs throughout his life.  Herb became a member of First Baptist Church of Leavenworth in 1976.  He was an AWANA leader for 6 years and taught 4th-6th grade Sunday School for 15 years.  Herb loved working with kids and was a Scout Master for a total of 21 years (Springfield, MO T-14, Reeds Spring, MO T-63, Leavenworth, KS T-163).  Herb loved water sports, tennis, photography, classic cars, and most of all, his family.  Herb is survived by his sons, Jeff Mayfield (wife Christi) of Branson, MO and Mike Mayfield (wife Christi) of Olathe, KS, as well as grandchildren, Samuel, Peter, Anna, Jordan, Kate (husband Matt) Knox, Noah (wife Nichole) Crosson, Nathan (wife Hunter) Crosson and one great-grandchild Jackson Crosson.

Visitation will be  Friday, December 1 at First Baptist Church of Leavenworth, KS  at 5:00, followed by a Christian Graduation service at 6:00. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, MO on Monday, December 4 at 1:00.
