Obituary

James "Jim" "Grippy" Murlin Smith, 82, of Lansing, KS died on September 12, 2021, surrounded by family at St. Luke's North Hospital, K.C., MO. Born on November 21, 1938, in Leavenworth, KS to Evelyn E. (Clements) Smith and Murlin W. Smith.  Jim grew up with two younger siblings, Larry (his late wife Jenny) and Sue (David Ryan). Jim graduated from Leavenworth Senior High in 1956. Married his soulmate Harriet K. Filbert in Miami, OK 1961, and was blessed with four children.

Jim worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone for over 25 years. He started his career as a switchman, moved to lineman, and retired as a service technician. He ended his career at the Leavenworth VA after 12 years in the IT department. Jim enjoyed wood working, bee keeping, bird watching, gardening, and watching his grandchildren and great grand children grow up and explore their passions. Caring for family and helping others was always his priority.

Jim was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years and 11 months, Harriet. His children: Melissa K. Peters, James R. "Bob" Smith (Lisa), Matthew M. Smith, Rebecca "Becky" S. Caldwell (Monte), his 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 16, at 10:30 am at Sunset Memory Gardens of Leavenworth, KS. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Red Cross online. It is also suggested that individuals donate blood to American Red Cross.
