Obituary

James (Jim) W. Thompson, 74, Leavenworth, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Jim was born August 10, 1948 in Leavenworth, Kansas to James D. and Dorothy (Johnson) Thompson.

After graduating from Leavenworth High School he served eight years in The United States Navy, and served in Vietnam. He was awarded the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation with Gallantry Cross, and Meritorious Unit Commendation. Before leaving the Navy he reached the rank of E8, Senior Chief Petty Officer. Jim is part of the Argentine Wall Of Fame for his contributions to students in the community of Argentine in Kansas City, Kansas.

On February 25, 1977, Jim married Mary Satriano. This marriage was blessed with two children, James and Kimberly.

Jim worked various jobs from the age of 11. After he enlisted and served eight years in the U.S. Navy, he was a small business owner (air conditioning and heating), United States Civil Service and Home Depot.

Jim lived in various places, being stationed on Navy AirCraft Carriers in Florida, California, but spent the majority of his life in Leavenworth. Jim was willing and eager to learn anything - woodworking, wine making, brewing, pottery, fishing. The list goes on and on.

Jim was the Youth Leader at First Baptist Church for many years, and he led several mission trips.

Jim is survived by his wife Mary (Satriano) Thompson, his son, James (Elizabeth) Thompson, daughter, Kimberly Thompson, two brothers Jerry (Debbie) Thompson, John Thompson, grandchildren Carmen, Janee, Judah, and Alara (Kimberly), Jahawn Byrd (James), brother in laws, William (Karen) Satriano, Michael Satriano, sister in laws, Helen (Mike) McCann, Anne Satriano, ten nephews and nieces.

Jim was considered a father by a host of others through the years. He touched the lives of many youth.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James D. Thompson, Dorothy E. Bush, stepfather, Turner (Bud) Bush, mother and father in law, Michael and Gerry Satriano, a nephew, Jason Thompson and a grandson, Matthew Thompson.

Memorial contributions may be given to Gary Sinise Foundation or Habitat for Humanity.

Visitation will be held at Davis Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. Celebration of Life will be held at Davis Funeral Chapel on Tuesday November 1, 2022 at 1 P.M. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 2:30 P.M. with military honors.
