Janet Sue Tharp, 83, of Leavenworth, Kansas, passed away peacefully at her home on July 8, 2026 after a long battle of cancer and respiratory issues.

Janet was born on January 6, 1943, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to Henry and Louie Taylor. She was raised in a military family, as her father served in the United States Air Force. Along with her brothers, Richard Taylor of Leavenworth and David Taylor of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Janet experienced life in many different places and attended several schools before graduating from Leavenworth High School in 1961.

Following high school, Janet pursued her passion for beauty and style by attending cosmetology school and building a career as a hairdresser.

On April 4, 1969, Janet married Samuel R. Tharp at Fort Leavenworth. Continuing the military tradition that had shaped much of her life, she supported Samuel throughout his 22 years of active-duty service in the United States Army. Together, they traveled extensively before eventually settling in Leavenworth, where they raised their family.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Louie Taylor; her stepson, Steve Tharp, her beloved husband, Samuel R. Tharp; and her sisters-in-law, Belinda Taylor and Loyce Ann Taylor.

She is survived by her stepson, Richard Tharp of Columbia, Missouri; her daughters, Cynthia Hyde (Cary) of Leavenworth and Melissa Jones of Leavenworth; and her cherished grandchildren, Jessica Vomund (Eddie), Jared Tharp (Alissa), Bryan LaFave of Kansas City, Missouri, Collin Jones (Madison) of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Brandon Jones of Leavenworth. Janet also has the sweetest group of great granddaughters; Audrey, Addison, Adrienne, Avery and Regan. Janet was also joyfully anticipating the arrival of a new great-grandchild in September.

A devoted member of First United Methodist Church, Janet spent many years assisting with the Sunday School programs in the church's education building. She had a deep love for animals and supported numerous animal welfare organizations throughout her life. Janet was also a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Janet enjoyed traveling, trying her luck on the slot machines at the casino, shopping with her friends, and collecting antiques. Above all, she treasured the time she spent with her family, friends, and beloved pets.

A small burial service will be held at Leavenworth National Cemetery on July 29, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Country Store/Hope Pets, 728 Cherokee Street, Leavenworth, KS 66048.

Janet's kindness, warmth, and love for family, animals, and friends will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
