Margaret Gettys Coon (Peggy) passed away on Friday, 24 May 2024 at the age of 96. She touched many during her long life, and her kind and loving spirit will live on in our memories. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John Ellis Coon, and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Jane Coon, her granddaughters Stephanie and Kathleen, and her great-grandson John. Peggy was born January 1, 1928 in Manahawkin New Jersey, to Charles and Lela Gettys. As both the daughter and wife of career Army officers, Peggy traveled extensively overseas and in the U.S. She grew up in Panama, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Germany, and Norway, before attending Gettysburg College, graduating in 1949. She and her husband John (Jack) were married May 15, 1954 in Blacksburg Virginia. Her travels as an Army Wife took her to Palo Alto and Monterey, California; the Washington DC area; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and overseas to Taiwan and Hong Kong. After returning to the US, she spent time living in Tampa, Florida; Carlisle, Pennsylvania; and McLean, Virginia before retiring in Carlisle, where she and Jack lived for 30 years until his death in 2007. In 2008, Peggy moved to the Kansas City area, where her son and his family were living. In 2016, she became a resident of the Twin Oaks Health and Rehabilitation community in Lansing, KS, remaining there and making many friends among both the residents and the caregiving staff, until her death. Her family and friends will remember Peggy for her love, generosity, and for her impeccable manners and politeness. She treated everyone she met with respect and kindness. She was a consistently active participant in local community activities wherever she lived. In addition to travel, Peggy enjoyed entertaining, holiday gatherings, and shopping outings with friends and family, and in her last years, visits from family. She took special joy in watching first her grandchildren, and then a great-grandchild, grow and mature. Peggy was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, a loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and a dear friend to many. She will be missed by all who knew her, and we will keep her in our hearts always.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Davis Funeral Chapel from 1 to 2 P.M. Funeral service will follow at 2 P.M. at Davis Funeral Chapel. Burial will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
