Obituary

Melvin Edward Toedter passed away on June 23, 2026. The son of Edward and Irene (Gigstad) Toedter, he was born at his family’s farmhouse on January 3, 1940, in Easton, KS. He was active in track and basketball while he attended No. 6 grade school and until graduation from Easton High School.

After high school, Melvin joined the United States Navy. He was proud to have served four honorable years and enjoyed sharing stories of his trips out of San Diego to ports around the world.

Melvin began working for the Bureau of Prisons in 1963 and met his wife, Shirley Wiltrout, while assigned to the Washington, D.C. area. They were married and moved to Leavenworth in 1965 where they were blessed with two sons and three beautiful grandchildren.

Melvin enjoyed traveling with his family, fishing, watching KU basketball, and either cheering for or yelling at his beloved KC Royals and Chiefs.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Karen (Toedter) Lewis; a son, Daniel and his wife, Shirley.

Melvin is survived by his son, Steven Toedter, Leavenworth; grandchildren, Hailyn, Kendall, and Langston Toedter, Lansing, KS; one sister, Marilyn (Larry) Harper, Parkville, MO; brother-in-law, Allen Lewis, Rockford, WA; and numerous cousins and extended family he valued spending time with.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 30, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Davis Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 9 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Easton, KS. Memorials are suggested to St. John Cemetery Association in care of Davis Funeral Chapel.
