Nancy L.
Barber
Oct 1, 1940 — Jun 28, 2023
Leawood
Nancy Lou Meyer Barber, 82, Leawood KS, passed peacefully in her sleep, Wednesday, 06/28/2023.
Nancy was born 10-01-1940, in Midland, Texas, the daughter of Ivan J "Swede" Meyer and Lucille Cooper Meyer. After her father's military career, the family settled in Leavenworth, KS where Nancy attended local schools, graduating from KU with a BA in philosophy. She was a proud member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and remained close to many of her sisters throughout her life.
Nancy raised her children, Fred Benson and Suzanne Moorehouse in Kirksville, MO where she also owned and managed the "The Daffodil," a lady's finery store for over 20 years. Nancy began her lifelong commitment to community service by volunteering in her children's schools and then later in city government.
She eventually retired from retail and returned to eastern Kansas. Nancy remained active, volunteering at Menorah Medical Center, and the Kaufman Center for Fine Arts. She was an avid member and volunteer at her local and national Rotary, earning many awards for her commitment to service.
Nancy was a vivacious, funny, well-loved member of her family and community. She shared her love to travel with everyone around her and visited all seven continents. Nancy was a staunch supporter of animals of every kind. She once rescued a baby robin who fell out of its nest and nurtured it to maturity. She gave wonderful lives to many stray or unwanted cats and kittens.
She is survived by many loving family members: Uncle Shorty Meyer and Aunt June Baker. Her brothers, Steve Meyer, his wife Kathy and Doug Meyer. Her children, Fred Benson and Suzanne Moorehouse; grandchildren: Caleb Benson & his wife Rachel, Piper Benson and Emily Moorehouse. And many other extended nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are to be held at Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, KS, July 8th , 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers Nancy would love to have donations made to Wayside Waifs, 3901 Martha Truman Rd, Kansas City, MO 64137.
