Paul was born January 12, 1936 in Paola, Kansas, son of Beulah and Albert Johnson. After graduating Paola High School, he attended the University of Kansas, receiving a BA in chemistry and an MD. His medical internship was with George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Paul served aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid in the U.S. Navy, and in 1962 he married Rebecca Swander, and the couple moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where Paul was stationed.

Paul and Becky lived in Europe for a year as Paul continued his studies at the Burgholzli Psychiatric Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. When they returned, Paul began general practice in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was board certified by the American Board of Family Practice and was recertified five times.

After retiring from family practice, Paul volunteered as a pediatric physician in North Kansas City. In recent years, he volunteered at Leavenworth's night shelter at the Interfaith Community of Hope. Paul was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Leavenworth for 56 years, serving on its vestry as treasurer. He served on the Leavenworth school board, water board, and recently accepted the invitation to sit on the board for Leavenworth Attainable Housing.

Paul enjoyed farming, shape-note singing, and Bible study. He was a voracious reader and scholar throughout his life. While driving, he enjoyed listening to lectures on a wide variety subjects, including medicine, world religions, philosophy, classical literature, and law.

Paul is survived by Rebecca ("Becky"), his wife of 59 years; by his children and daughters-in-law, Carl Johnson (Mary Beth), Sarah Johnson, Eric Johnson (Heather); by his grandchildren, Logan Bruce, Paul Johnson, Teresa Johnson, Emma Johnson, and Grace Bruce Johnson; and by his beloved nieces and nephews.

He was deeply loved by many, as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
