Renate Edwards Julian, 93, passed away on Monday, May 12. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, she is survived by her daughter, Tamara Carson, granddaughter Lydia McIntosh, grandson Jesse McIntosh, brother Ottmar Lang and sister Konstanze Speroulias.
Renate was widely known as a talented dance instructor and studio owner, with successful locations in Leavenworth, Fort Leavenworth, and Atchison, Kansas. A trailblazer in female entrepreneurship, she was honored with a Chamber of Commerce membership plaque in 1983,
recognizing her contribution to the local business community.
Her lifelong devotion to dance began at the age of five, when she received a scholarship to train with the Stuttgart Opera Ballet. Over the next nine years, she performed numerous child soloist roles. After World War II, Renate toured with dance companies, performed in nightclubs, joined
USO tours, and appeared on television in Chicago. She continued her classical ballet training for 15 years at the University of Missouri–Kansas City with Tatiana Dokowdovska, founder of the Kansas City Ballet, and also studied at the International Dance Academy in Cologne, Germany.
Renate began teaching in 1954, dedicating over four decades to promoting physical activity and discipline through dance. Her mission was to inspire rather than perform, believing that adults play a crucial role in nurturing perseverance and self-confidence in children. "To me that's an
achievement," she once said, "it gives them self-confidence."
Beyond the studio, Renate was passionate about education and cultural exchange. She taught Sunday School and served as a classroom aide in local public schools, particularly those attended by children of allied officers. As an immigrant herself, she was deeply committed to supporting
international families at Fort Leavenworth, serving as a civilian sponsor from the early 1970s for many decades. These relationships brought her great joy and fulfillment.
Renate Edwards Julian will be remembered for her grace, strength, and unwavering dedication to the well-being and growth of generations of children.
