Obituary

Richard Allen Swart, 80, of Lansing Kansas, passed away Tuesday August 31, 2021 at Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth from complications related to COVID-19. He was born on August 21, 1941 in Wichita, Kan. to Willis Driscoll Swart and Kathryn Frances O'Bryan.

Richard was raised in the Wichita area and after graduating from Maize High School in 1959, he immediately joined the workforce. He spent the majority of his working career as a hospital purchasing agent - getting a good deal was one of Richard's greatest passions.

On a visit to California in 1976, Richard met Thelma Louise Sybert and her three-year-old daughter, Tisha Marie. Thelma was getting ready to move back to the Kansas City area to be with family and Richard offered to help with the move.

Richard and Thelma made it as far as Richard's home in Wichita and the rest is history - they were married in 1978. Richard adopted Tisha in January of 1980 and in September of that same year their family grew again when Stacy was born.

In addition to Wichita, the family lived in Liberal, Manhattan, Hutchinson, Leavenworth and finally settled in Lansing in 1989.

Richard was happy to retire from Appleton Paper Company in 2008 so he could devote more time to family and bargain hunting. He could often be found at the local K-Mart or grocery store with a binder full of coupons - usually accompanied by one of his grandchildren. Richard's car automatically stopped at all yard sales, estate sales and he loved a good auction.

Richard was diagnosed with non-hodgknis lymphoma in 2015, he also fought lung cancer and kidney cancer over the last 6 years. Through it all, he never complained and only slowed downin the last year when he was diagnosed with dementia.

The last three months of his life, Richard spent time making new friends and going on field trips with AIR Dementia Ministries at the First United Methodist Church in Leavenworth and The Deeper Window Association's "Let's Roll with Sister Vicki" mobile respite program. His family isextremely grateful for the volunteers and love and support from both of these programs.
