Robert (Bob) N. Storms Jr. 86, Leavenworth KS, passed away March 5, 2021 at St. Luke's Hospice House, Kansas City, Mo. with his wife Betty and daughter Sue by his side. Bob was a lung cancer survivor and had a lengthy battle with lymphoma, complicated with the COVID- 19 virus which had kept us isolated for the past year.

Bob was born in Brooklyn, N.Y to Robert N. Storms Sr and Janet (MacLean) Storms. He spent his early childhood in New England and moved to California as a teen. After graduating from the University of Colorado, Boulder with a BA degree in history in 1956, Bob started his military career at Ft. Belvoir, Va.

While at Belvoir he met Elizabeth (Betty) Gould and after a whirlwind courtship they married August 24,1957 in Bordentown, NJ.

Bob served in Alaska as part of an Armor unit, Korea, Vietnam and Turkey. He earned a Master's degree at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.in 1965. As a foreign area specialist, he studied Turkish at the language school in Monterey, California for one year and did additional graduate work at Columbia University, NY. He attended the Command and General Staff College, Ft Leavenworth which he felt was one of the best years of his military career, his class was very relaxed and fun loving.

Bob went to Turkey and continued further language training while attached to the Embassy in Ankara. He travelled extensively in Turkey in a large van we affectionately nicknamed "Gort". The family was included for most of the travels. He served an additional two years in Izmir, where Bob was with NATO LandSouthEast. He returned to Ft. Leavenworth and became part of the faculty for Command and General Staff College. Bob retired at Fort Leavenworth August 1978. After military retirement he taught history and political science at several community colleges.

During his years of service, Bob earned a Parachute badge, a National Defense Service medal, a Merit Service medal and Bronze Star, and additional service medals. He felt it an honor to serve in the United States Army and thoroughly enjoyed his military career.

Bob was preceded in death by his son Robert William Storms in 2017, his parents Robert N Storms and Janet MacLean Storms and several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth (Gould) Storms, sister Mary Storms Ford (California), daughter Susan Storms Ball, daughter-in-law Rose Evans Storms, and six grandchildren, Bailey Elizabeth Storms, Kristen (Bryan) Ochocki, Stacy (Mark) Daniel, Rebekah (Cody) Cotten, Brady (Allison) Ball, Bryan (Allison) Ball, as well as 6 great-grandchildren and one anticipated soon.

Bob enjoyed being with his family, traveling, gardening, bird watching with trips to welcome the sandhill cranes (he always knew the names of his backyards birds), his aquariums, playing games with family and friends especially cribbage (he and Betty played daily at lunch), chess, and dominoes.

He especially looked forward to the monthly meeting with the Silverbacks Book Club, and the "Old Bastards" meeting every Friday morning. Bob was a lifelong member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).

We wish to thank the tireless nursing staff at KU Med for all the care during his lengthy battle with lymphoma and at St Luke's Hospice House for the comfort given.

There will be a Memorial Reception at June's Northland, 614 Pottawatomie St, Leavenworth, KS 66048, on Friday, March 26, 2021 from 11:30 to 2:00. Please come and visit with his family, share memories, and toast Bob.

Burial will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery, at a later date.
