Theresa J. (Drake) Schmitt, 72, died June 28, 2024. She was born April 13, 1952, to Jean T. Drake and Helen (Walden) Drake in Kansas City, KS.
She was the first of five children and grew up in rural Tonganoxie, KS and moved to Leavenworth, KS in 1972. Theresa married Thomas L. Schmitt in 1975, and they had one daughter, Alyson. Theresa attended Basehor Elementary School in Basehor, KS, Sacred Heart Grade School in Bonner Springs, KS, and Immaculata High School in Leavenworth, KS. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (1982) from St. Mary College (now St. Mary University) in Leavenworth, KS. She worked in various administrative roles at the V.A. Medical Center in Leavenworth, KS, and retired from there in April 2016. Theresa is predeceased by her husband, parents, and brother, Daniel
Drake. She is survived by her daughter, Alyson R. Jones, and granddaughter, Ashley E. Jones, of Kansas City, MO, as well as sisters
June Hanna (Greg) of Farmington Hills, MI and Karen Denavit (Paul) of Addison, VT, brother David Drake (Julie) of Lenexa, KS and several
nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Theresa was a loving wife, mother, grandma, sister, and aunt who was always willing to help and provide support. She loved baking and sharing
her culinary delights. Everyone loved her pies (apple, peach, and cherry). Other favorites included plum bread, bread pudding, banana bread, and orange Jell-O salad. She also enjoyed flowers. Her favorites included begonias, coleus, impatiens, and poinsettias.
A celebration of life will be held at 12 noon on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, KS. Inurnment is scheduled for the
same day at 2:30pm at the National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. If you wish, you may wear "begonia pink" in memory of Theresa. Memorial contributions can be made to American Cancer Society, HOPE Pet Rescue, Wounded Warrior Project, or to any charity of your choice.
