Thomas L. (Tom) Schmitt, 90, died February 17, 2022. He was born February 15, 1932, to A. L. and Rosetta Spencer Schmitt at DePauw, Indiana, the fourth of six children; his parents, two sisters and three brothers predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Schmitt, his daughter, Alyson R. Jones, son-in-law, Adam Jones, granddaughter, Ashley Elizabeth of North Kansas City, Missouri, and several nieces and nephews.
In 1974, Tom retired from active duty at the U. S. Disciplinary Barracks, Department of the Army, Fort Leavenworth. He was a Vietnam War Veteran serving two tours of duty in the 1960s. Tom was employed for 10 years by the U.S. Federal Prison, Leavenworth, KS, first in Computer Programming Industries and then in the Education Department managing the faculty who came into the prison to educate prisoners. In 1995, he retired from the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, Fort Leavenworth, as the manager of the Vocational Training Department. For several years, he was an adjunct faculty member teaching computer/data processing courses at the Kansas City Kansas Community College, Leavenworth site.
The family thanks the staff at Lansing Rehabilitation and Care facility and to the staff at Traditions Hospice for the great care and support given to Tom in the last months of his life.
Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Per Tom's request, no visitation is planned. Inurnment will be scheduled for a later date at the National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas. Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
